Cartier Art Deco jade, amethyst, diamond, and enamel flower earrings
Cartier Art Deco jade, amethyst, diamond, and enamel flower earrings
A pair of Art Deco Cartier earrings in the form of flowers comprised of carved jade set with diamond and embellished by amethyst and burgundy enamel leaves, in 18k. Cartier Paris #10172. Platinum posts added later
Among the many influences that shaped Cartier's celebrated goût chinois during the 1920s, carved jade occupied a place of particular importance. Following the rediscovery of Chinese decorative arts in Europe during the early twentieth century, Cartier began incorporating antique and newly carved jade into jewels that merged Eastern motifs with the streamlined geometry of Art Deco.
In this example, Cartier masterfully balances carved jade, glossy enamel, cabochon gemstones, and brilliant-cut diamonds within a compact floral composition that feels remarkably dimensional despite its modest scale.
