Antique gold and gemset butterfly brooch, Mappin & Webb, London

No Z30516 Circa 1908 $13,500
An antique butterfly brooch under carved crystal with a diamond carapace and ruby eyes, in silver and 15k gold, with fitted original case. Retailed by Mappin & Webb, London. Maker's mark S&C, hallmarked 1908-09. Atw 0.40 ct. old mine cut diamonds.

Right in step with the Victorian mania for collecting and cataloguing specimens from all over the globe, lepidoptera - or butterfly - collecting was an especially compelling way to showcase the artistry and jewels of the natural world. (Winston Churchill was a noted lepidopterist.)
Founded in 1775 by Jonathan Mappin, silversmiths Mappin & Webb have held royal warrants in the UK starting in 1897, with patrons including the Empress of Russia, Marie Antoinette, and Princess Grace of Monaco. The company was also granted royal warrants by the Russian Empire and the Royal Household of Japan.
