Important Marchak, Paris Ceylon sapphire ring
A Mid-Century gold and cushion-cut sapphire ring, centered by a prong-set, unheated, blue. Burma sapphire, atw. 6.87 cts. (AGL report #1151447), set within a square gold broder, with tapered shoulders and a twisted band, in 18k. Marchak, Paris.
The firm Marchak began shortly after 1918, when Alexander Marchak fled the Russian Revolution to Paris. There he formed a partnership with Robert Linzeler, and they exhibited jewelry at the 1925 Exposition des Arts Decoratifs.
Among such renowned firms as Van Cleef & Arpels, Boivin, Cartier, Boucheron and Chaumet, Marchak successfully participated in the influential 1937 International Exhibition of Arts and Techniques in Modern Life in Paris. The reappearance of the figurative styles demonstrated during the Exhibition became a source of inspiration for jewelers during the years between 1940 and 1950. Also, the exhibitors of 1937 displayed particular interest in the technical aspect of the jewelry making process. The members of the Vetting Committee noted that the stones and the precious materials used 'were on a much higher level,' according to the Exhibition report.
Marchak's son went on to take control of the business, and continued designing jewelry throughout the 1940's.
