Tiffany & Co. was founded in New York City in 1837 by Charles Lewis Tiffany and John B. Young as a stationery and fancy goods store at 259 Broadway. By 1853, Charles Lewis Tiffany had assumed control of the business, renamed it Tiffany & Co., and increasingly focused the company on fine jewelry, silver, and luxury goods. In the nineteenth century, Tiffany became one of America’s most important jewelers, earning international recognition for silver, design, and gemstones. At the 1867 Paris World’s Fair, Tiffany became the first American design house to receive an award from a foreign jury.

The house’s reputation was shaped by figures such as Edward C. Moore, who elevated Tiffany silver; George Frederick Kunz, the renowned gemologist who helped source and promote important American gemstones; and Louis Comfort Tiffany, whose artistic jewelry and glasswork brought Art Nouveau influence to the firm. In the twentieth century, Tiffany expanded its design identity through collaborations with Jean Schlumberger, Donald Claflin, Elsa Peretti, and Paloma Picasso, each of whom helped define a distinct chapter in the house’s modern history. Today, Tiffany & Co. remains admired for its refined American craftsmanship and strong design identity.
