Antique gold longchain with a repoussé closure
Antique gold longchain with a repoussé closure
A Georgian gold, ladder-motif longchain comprised of alternating etched and plain links, terminating in a repoussé closure, in 18k
This longchain is arranged in a delicate ladder-like pattern, its alternating etched and polished gold links creating a subtle play of light and texture. The loosely articulated construction allows the gold to drape fluidly, whether worn doubled or even tripled. The chain terminates in an elaborate repoussé closure. The repoussé technique, in which metal is worked from the reverse to create relief decoration, lends the clasp a dimensionality that creates contrasts with the repeating geometry of the chain.
Longchains were a fashionable and versatile accessory during the Georgian period, often worn draped elegantly over the bodice, doubled around the neck, or accompanied by a pendant, watch, or other personal ornament. The period's goldsmiths were particularly accomplished in the art of producing elaborate chains, employing stamping, engraving, and other decorative techniques to achieve richly detailed surfaces while maintaining a sense of lightness and flexibility.
