Antique Carlo Giuliano gold and silver Etruscan Revival decadrachm coin necklace
Antique Carlo Giuliano gold and silver Etruscan Revival decadrachm coin necklace
A Victorian Etruscan Revival gold and silver "bulla" coin necklace, centered by a 19th century reproduction of a Decadrachm of Syracuse coin, by Euainetos, set within a pierced border of alternating gold beads and granulated triangles, with a ropetwist edge, surmounted by a fixed, granulated bale, and suspended from a wheat sheaf chain, terminating in a ribbed, barrel clasp, in 18k. Stamped "CG" on chain and pendant for Carlo Giuliano, England.
The ancient silver decadrachm of Syracuse is one of the most celebrated coins from antiquity, minted around 405-400 BCE to commemorate the Syracusan victory over the Athenians. Struck with dies by master engravers like Euainetos and Kimon, the coin's obverse depicts a quadriga (four-horse chariot) with the goddess Nike crowning the charioteer, while the reverse features the head of the nymph Arethusa surrounded by dolphins. These coins are highly collectible today due to their rarity, exquisite artistry, and immense historical significance.
The coin's popularity led to a fascination with them in 19th-century England, where collectors and artists sought to own and study them. This demand was met by skilled craftsmen, most notably Robert Ready and his sons, who produced highly accurate replicas called electrotypes, as well as Matthew Boulton. They used a process of electroplating to create exact copies from molds taken from genuine coins, allowing museums and private collectors to possess the beauty of the originals without the prohibitive cost. These 19th-century electrotypes have become collectibles in their own right, valued for their historical connection to the golden age of numismatic collecting and for the skill of their creators.
