In acrostic jewelry, the first letter of each gemstone is used to create a secret word or message that usually conveys endearment. "REGARD" and "DEAREST" were among the most popular words spelled out in stones during the nineteenth-century.
Napoleon Bonaparte was an admirer of acrostic jewelry and had commissioned several pieces for himself and for family members, some of which commemorated special events.
