1920s coral and gold pyramid ring

1920s coral and gold pyramid ring

An Art Deco coral, platinum, and gold ring of pyramidal design, centered by a sugarloaf coral with pierced gold sides separated by tapering platinum bars, in platinum and 18k.

Sugarloaf cabochons are a wonderful variation on the traditional cabochon shape, rarer and often highly desirable. A sugarloaf, like all cabochons, has a smooth, polished surface and no facets, utilizing some of the most ancient cutting techniques. Sugarloaf cabochons have a four-sided, domed pyramidal shape, which optimizes the natural colors of a variety of colored stones.
The stone cut is presumably named after the form in which refined sugar was usually produced and sold until the mid-19th century when it became available in cubes and granulated form.
