An early 20th century gold and enamel Légion d'honneur badge, in 18k, with original sash and Cartier case. French assay marks.

For over two hundred years, the Legion of Honour has been the highest reward given by the French government to deserving recipients who have made major contributions in government, diplomacy, the arts, and sports.

This medal was awarded to Dr. Henry van Dyke, Jr. in 1919. Dr. van Dyke was made a commandeur of the Legion of Honour for his services to the Allied cause as the acting American ambassador to the Netherlands during the first world war.

In addition to being a diplomat, Dr. van Dyke was also a Presbyterian clergyman, professor of English literature at Princeton University, author, and poet. Some of his best known works include the lyrics for the popular hymn "Joyful, Joyful We Adore Thee" (1907) and the poem "Time Is" a section of which was read at the funeral of Princess Diana.
