4. What is the difference between antique, period and estate jewelry?
The term "antique" covers those pieces made more than 100 years ago. Period jewelry refers to jewelry that exhibits the design characteristics of a particular past era such as Art Deco. (For more information about the specific periods of jewelry, see the Timeline.) Estate Jewelry does not necessarily refer to articles that have come from an estate. In current usage it means jewelry that has been previously owned or is second hand.

5. Why should I buy antique jewelry?
Most modern jewelry draws on the past for its inspiration. With antique jewelry, one may choose from the seemingly endless number of styles and motifs that populate the history of jewelry. It is exciting to wear pieces that are no longer made and ones that often employ techniques, materials, and craftsmanship that cannot be found today. The recent surge in demand and the scarcity of supply attests to the value of collecting antique jewelry.

6. What are the most important considerations when buying antique jewelry?
The foremost considerations are condition and quality. Is the piece well made? Does it show any signs of wear? Has it been repaired, and if so, has the repair been well executed in the original spirit of the piece? Is the dealer you are buying from reputable and willing to stand behind your purchase?

7. What is the significance of a signed piece?
A signed piece indicates the individual or the firm who made or sold a piece of jewelry.
Signatures alone are no guarantee of quality, nor are they always authentic. Put your trust in a knowledgeable dealer. Certain names in the history of jewelry making are recognized for their superb and innovative craftsmanship. Castellani, Lalique, Cartier, and Van Cleef & Arpels are among them. Distinctive signed jewelry made by master jewelers of the past often commands higher prices.

8. Do you do appraisals?
Our invoices offer complete documentation, with stone identification, weights, metals, dimensions, and dating. We can supply photographs of purchased items as well. This is often sufficient for most insurance companies. If not, we will be happy to recommend independent appraisers who are knowledgeable about antique and period jewelry.
